The USGA Green is a standard method developed by the United States Golf Association for the construction of golf greens. The concept is based on a perched water table, whereby the rootzone for the grass on the green is perched over a freely draining gravel layer. The rootzone itself is composed mainly of sand with organic matter and selected so that the particle size is just the optimum size to hold water in dry conditions to sustain the plant but will also drain rapidly if more water is added. This is the generally accepted industry standard for new golf greens.
