The stage has been set for the biggest ever professional golf tournament in Africa to be held in Nigeria in late 2012. The tournament, the Africa Open, will hold at the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Resort, Uyo with an incredible prize fee of $1.5 million (about N225 million) on offer.
A 52-player-field from 25 countries will feature at the three-day event. The winner will bank $300,000 (about N45million).
This ambitious proposal is at the instance of US-based sports brand management group, IMG.
Ibom Resort is unarguably Nigeria’s benchmark golf layout with its stock enhanced by five-star on course, Le Meridien Hotel.
Sam Logan of IMG, said the philosophy behind the proposed Africa Cup, is to use golf to drive Akwa Ibom in its desire to be Nigeria’s preferred international destination.
Last year, IMG signed a seven-year management agreement with Le Meridien to run the golf course.
Ernie Els is among a host of international golfers which include, Colin Montgomerie, Rory Sabatini and Retief Goosen, expected to attend the tournament. For Full Story Go to http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/le-meridien-plans-africa-cup-for-nigeria/84967/
